The European Commission has approved state aid worth €5.2bn for a second wave of hydrogen related Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI), helping to reduce dependence on natural gas and accelerate the hydrogen economy.

Canada is already a global leader in blue hydrogen production, or that produced using natural gas feedstocks paired with carbon capture.

The areas of potential cooperation include upstream and downstream businesses, engineering and construction, oilfield services, carbon capture and hydrogen.

Hydrogen is becoming a more versatile fuel, however, and is receiving interest in energy storage, as a transportation fuel, as a fuel for electricity generation, and as a fuel for heating.

Green means the hydrogen has been made using electricity and from renewable sources. But as with electric cars, the environmental footprint is determined by the power mix carbon intensity if it is connected to the grid.

A single nuclear power plant has the potential to generate enough hydrogen to decarbonise the heating of one million homes or 40,000 hydrogen buses from a site no more than a few square miles in size, with technology that is available today.
