The sanctions, however, made exemptions for transactions related to the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project in Russia's far east until June 28, 2025, according to an updated general license published by the treasury department.

The five projects represent a total investment of SAR35bn (US$9.3bn) and align with Saudi Vision 2030 goals to achieve a balanced energy mix with 50% renewables and 50% gas.

The east-route pipeline is connected to the Power of Siberia pipeline which transports Russian gas to China. A second project, Power of Siberia 2, is currently under consideration and could have a capacity of 50 bcm/year.
