The Leviathan reservoir began supplying Egypt shortly after production commenced in 2020, under an initial deal signed in 2019 for 4.7 bcm/year, which is expected to be fully delivered by the early 2030s.

Rising domestic demand, hot summers and rapidly deteriorating local production mean Egypt needs to buy increasing volumes of LNG.

The first agreement was signed between Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and a consortium of the UAE’s TAQA and France’s Voltalia for the development of a 3.2 GW renewable energy project, which will feature 2.1 GW of solar and 1.1 GW of wind capacity. The project would be located around 130 kilometers south-east of Cairo, near the 545 MW Zarafana wind project, and could be commissioned by 2028.

The El Dabaa NPP will comprise four units with generation III+ VVER-1200 pressurised water reactors. The NPP is being constructed in accordance with and contracts that entered into force in 2017. The $30bn project is mainly financed through a $25bn Russian loan.

Masdar, along with its Dutch joint venture company Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to construct a 10 GW onshore wind project in Egypt.

Under a 2017 contract, the reactors are being supplied by Russia's Rosatom, complete with a lifetime of nuclear fuel and facilities for used fuel storage.
