The El Dabaa NPP will comprise four units with generation III+ VVER-1200 pressurised water reactors. The NPP is being constructed in accordance with and contracts that entered into force in 2017. The $30bn project is mainly financed through a $25bn Russian loan.

The deepwater Nargis block is located off the city of Arish on the Sinai Peninsula. It is one of four offshore exploration blocks off Egypt’s coast in which the US group Chevron holds operating interests, alongside with the Egyptian oil company Tharwa Petroleum.

Egypt has two LNG export facilities -- the 7.2 million mt/year Shell-operated Idku facility and the smaller Eni-operated 5 million mt/year Damietta plant.

Masdar, along with its Dutch joint venture company Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to construct a 10 GW onshore wind project in Egypt.

Under a 2017 contract, the reactors are being supplied by Russia's Rosatom, complete with a lifetime of nuclear fuel and facilities for used fuel storage.

Alexander Korchagin, Atomstroyexport senior vice president for NPP construction project management, said the El Dabaa project - where construction formally began last month - is an attractive project for international companies. KHNP is joining a pool of qualified participants in the construction works, including major Egyptian companies, he added.

El-Dabaa - Egypt's first NPP - is to be built in the province of Matruh on the Mediterranean coast, about 300km north-west of Cairo.

The agreements cover a range of sectors, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, pharmaceuticals and e-commerce

Egypt has an electricity capacity of 62 GW (at the end of 2021), 80% of which is from gas and 10% from oil.
