The Spanish Secretariat of State for Energy has scheduled the new auction for 3.3 GW of renewables capacity for 19 October 2021.

To start, Spain plans to phase out both coal and nuclear power generation.

Through the partnership, RPC and Benbros will work on 14 projects in the regions of Andalucía, Extremadura, Castilla la Mancha, Aragon and Murcia.

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge has extended the operating licence for the 1,064 MW Cofrentes nuclear power plant in the province of Valencia until 30 November 2030.

Spanish utility group Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) has signed a joint-venture (JV) agreement with Cosmo Eco Power Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings Co Ltd (TYO:5021), and Hitachi Zosen Corp (TYO:7004) to co-develop the 600-MW Seihoku-oki offshore wind project in Japan.

The share of renewables in the total daily power production stayed above 50% throughout the month and twice reached 68.4%,

In November 2020, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved a decree establishing a new regulatory framework for renewable energy auctions, the Economic Renewable Energy Regime (Régimen Económico de Energías Renovables, REER).

By the December cut-off date, Spanish plants generated 109,269 GWh of renewable power, up by 11.6% year-on-year, owing mostly to favourable weather conditions and an increase in the total installed renewable energy capacity.

With its sunny plains, windy hillsides and gas infrastructure, Spain is keen to lead production of hydrogen using renewable resources, a process seen as key to meeting carbon emissions targets provided costs can be brought down.

The 2030 target will become for the electricity sector to secure 70% from renewable energy. This will be coupled with energy efficiency measures reducing consumption by at least 35% over the same period.
