China has unveiled a plan to expand its pumped-storage hydropower capacity to 62 GW in 2025 and 120 GW in 2030.

China Three Gorges Power Corporation (CTGPC) has started to produce power from the first two 1 GW units of the 16 GW Baihetan hydropower plant on the Jinsha River, the upper section of the Yangtze, between the borders of the southwest provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan (China).

Mozambique plans to sell a majority stake the 1.5 GW Mpanda Nkuwa hydropower plant on the Zambezi river in the western province of Tete.

China has fully commissioned its 10.2 GW Wudongde hydropower project on the Jinsha river in southern China, with the start of the 12th and last generator.

To limit dangerous global warming and achieve net zero by 2050, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says the water power sector will need to double in size to 2,600GW.

The civil works contract is worth US$355m and full commissioning is scheduled in mid-2024.
